The origin of San Luis is given with the emigration of families from the Central Valley in the 1920s, in order to occupy new productive land. This is how the number of families gradually increased and the difficult living conditions in the area improved. Initially, families grew subsistence food and traveled on horseback or on foot to the communities of Puntarenas and the Juntas de Abangares, in order to sell agricultural products or buy medicines, clothes, food, etc.

From the 1960s onwards, the community underwent important changes in educational aspects with the construction of two schools, the improvement of local roads and the opening of new sources of income (coffee and milk trade). The community is currently made up of three sectors: El Bajo de San Luis, El INVU and Alto de San Luis. The total population is approximately 80 families and 350 people.
The history of each village is like an open book. Its pages are filled with the faces and voices of their grandparents, children and youth, men and women. With many shouts of voices I rent the cattle in the pastures, the songs of coffee pickers at the end of the day, fruits of many flavors and colors. In this book there are also blank pages to be written with the life, visions and fruits of the new generations. With the dormant memories that awaken to remind us of where we come from and who we are.
The initiative of the San Luis Development Association to open an information site about our town, taking advantage of Internet resources, is a new opportunity to remember our origins. To transmit to our children's children the riches that have distinguished and shaped this town admired by its visitors and neighbors as an example of work, humility and cooperation for the common good of all its neighbors. This is not to say that San Luis is a spotless paradise. We also bear the traces of ignorance, poverty, and pain that we cannot hide and deny. Every family has had its very hard passages.
